This weekend the fam and I watched one of the best movies of 2017, Michael Gracey’s The Greatest Showman. I found it entertaining, inspiring, and energizing all at the same time.
The movie has a simple but beautiful message about embracing the things that make us different. The only way others will come to accept us is if we have fully accepted ourselves. P.T. Barnum was a man with a big vision and had the dream of making people, happy which he achieved by providing a different kind of entertainment. He looked not for people who look like him but for people far different from everyone else. He made them believe that their difference is what makes them special.
Two things that stood out for me are the beautiful choreography and soundtrack. Both of which highlighted the multi-talented Hugh Jackman, Zendaya, Kealla Settle, Zac Efron, and really just the entire cast of the film.
Two of the song from the soundtrack became instant personal favorites. One was Rewrite the Stars sung by Zac Efron and the beautiful Zendaya. (Side Note: Seeing Zac Efron sing and bust out some of those dance moves gave me major High School Musical vibes)
Although written as a love song, the lyrics talk about how no one can write our story but us. No one ever automatically gets a say in how our life pans out.
The second song is This is Me which is also becoming one of the most popular songs this year (if you have not listened to it yet, do so). It shares a message of self-empowerment like Rewrite the Stars and plays like an anthem with its high tempo and a powerful choral presence from the ensemble. Truly a song for anyone and everyone.
As we enter into a new week may we accept and celebrate our uniqueness as something beautiful that we can offer to the world. Like the fabulous characters from The Greatest Showman, let us not apologize for what we are or what we don’t have and just proudly bring our A game.
